Presenter: Joanna Aguilar, Mentor/Evaluator for the Early Educator Support Office at UNC Charlotte

This training will provide resources and strategies that help identify children’s literature that will promote children’s positive self-identity (Mirrors), facilitate children’s perspective taking regarding their culture and the culture of others (Windows), and support children’s agency/problem solving (Sliding Glass Doors).  This would support teachers in adding the lens of equity in creating literacy experiences for children who are BIPOC and/or with disabilities).  During the training, the NCAEYC Equity Statement, NCFELD, and NCPMI Equity literacy tool will be shared/reference, as well as examples of books and literacy/social emotional activities will be reviewed and connected to each area (Mirrors, Windows, and Sliding Doors).   Participants will be guided to resources referenced during the training. Activities during the presentation will come directly from Roots and Wings.

The focus of this training is centered on literacy and related activities that support the competence of the child as he/she/they navigate the world as a global citizen.
